NHI Statement re Hurricane Ophelia

16th October 2017: We commend the management and staff in nursing homes across the country who have undertaken huge personal sacrifices today to meet the care needs of those entrusted in their care. The residents within the 500-plus nursing homes across Ireland are dependent upon the multidisciplinary care staff who are employed within these homes from home to meet their high dependency care needs. These nursing homes have continued to operate under the very severe difficulties presented today by Hurricane Ophelia. This is because of the resolute commitment and dedication to care of staff who work within our nursing homes. It should be recognised nursing homes operate within the most isolated communities in Ireland.

Today we note the recently published Ulster University research, commissioned by NHI, The Lived Experience of Nursing Home Residents in the Context of the Nursing Homes as their ‘Home’. This research found: “As the research concludes, nursing homes can and are perceived as “home” by many residents. This can be attributed in significant part to compassionate, responsive and dedicated staff who on a daily basis help create a welcoming environment for residents in nursing homes across all parts of the country.”
