Click to read AIB’s Outlook: Long Term Care report – in association with Nursing Homes Ireland, which was launched last Tuesday 21st October.

The Report published the results of Ipsos MRBI research that NHI Members participated in. At the launch, AIB announced it was establishing up a €300 million Healthcare Fund to support investment in the healthcare sector and was attended by Tánaiste Joan Burton.

Some of the key stats emanating from the research conducted with NHI Members include:

  • Average occupancy rate is 95%94% of nursing homes surveyed currently at full capacity and said they had a waiting list
    • 97% in urban areas
    • 93% small town / rural areas
  • 43% consider number of beds they have will increase over next three years
  • 48% consider they will remain the same
  • 8% foresee decrease
  • 81% are of the view that the sector will not have added sufficient capacity to meet anticipated increase in demand over the coming years
  • 61% of residents are now aged 85 or more
  • Persons aged 85+ account for over 75% of residents in 1 in 3 homes
  • According to 50% of homes this cohort has increased over the past three years
  • 47% of all residents have dementia
  • 70% reported an increase in the number of residents with dementia
  • 89% of residents are dependent upon Fair Deal
