Statement from Nursing Homes Ireland on the Current Fuel Shortages Facing Essential Workers

Friday April 10, 2026

Mr Tadhg Daly, CEO, Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI), welcomes the invitation from Minister Kieran O’Donnell to a meeting on Wednesday 15th April to discuss the ongoing issues facing Nursing Home Staff caused by the current fuel shortages reported across the country.

NHI appreciates the Minister’s invitation and will continue to engage cooperatively with the Government, and all relevant Stakeholders, to ensure there is no disruption to the continuum of care provided to nursing home residents nationwide.

NHI is now calling on the Government to implement more immediate measures to support all essential workers access to fuel, especially in areas of the country where public transport is limited and fuel shortages are most acute. As the current energy and fuel crisis continues, it is vital to ensure the inclusion of all nursing homes (public, private, and voluntary) in the development of the emergency plans and additional energy supports currently being developed by Government and the Office of Emergency Planning.
