Nursing Homes Ireland Reflects on a Year of Progress and Advocacy in 2024

Wednesday December 18, 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) is proud to share the achievements, milestones, and advocacy efforts that defined the year. Through collaboration, progress, and an unwavering commitment to our members and residents, NHI has worked tirelessly to ensure the sustainability and future of nursing home care across Ireland.

Key highlights include the successful launch of the HOMES Strategy, an ambitious three-year plan placing residents at the very centre of care. This strategy has set a clear roadmap for delivering quality, equitable, and sustainable care while empowering members with practical tools and resources.

Reflecting on the year, Tadhg Daly, CEO of NHI, said:
“At the heart of all we do is the resident. Their care, dignity, and quality of life inspire our mission and reinforce the trust our members place in us to advocate on their behalf.”

Throughout 2024, NHI’s impactful advocacy continued to shape national conversations. Initiatives such as the “It’s Not Fair” campaign highlighted funding disparities under the Fair Deal Scheme, while our Pre-Budget Submission, engagement with the Commission on Care for Older People, and robust General Election commentary amplified the voice of nursing homes.

Education and training also remained a cornerstone of NHI’s work, with members benefitting from clinical education days, regional workshops, and an expanded webinar series. From regulatory updates to bespoke gerontology training in partnership with LHP Skillnet, NHI continues to equip members with the resources to navigate challenges and deliver exceptional care.

Tadhg Daly acknowledged the challenges faced by the sector but emphasised a positive outlook:
“While there is still work to be done, we enter 2025 with positivity and optimism. With a new Government on the horizon, and an empowered nursing home sector, we are ready to drive meaningful change and secure the future of care.”

As we celebrate these successes, NHI recognises that challenges remain. However, we enter 2025 with renewed optimism, a commitment to advocacy, and a nursing home sector that is engaged, resilient, and ready to champion the needs of residents and providers alike.

NHI would like to thank our members, the NHI Board, Chair, Committees, and all staff for their ongoing commitment and dedication.

Together, we look forward to building on this year’s successes and championing the future of nursing home care in Ireland.

Wishing all our members, residents, families, and staff a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
